Editorial note:

In the process of industrialization and urbanization, Chinese farmers have migrated in large amounts to cities in search of job opportunities. Presently, however, this does not mean these migrant farmers have become genuine citizens. Even migrants themselves often disapprove of their identity as a “citizen”. Such a phenomenon is both indicative of the tensions and conflicts surrounding China’s economic development, and goes against the Chinese government’s desire of promoting social harmony. The two authors of this article carried out in-depth surveys to reveal the various perceptions of migrant farmers on their identity. Based on these surveys, the authors attempt to shed light on the underlying causes of this complex problem.
