The pharmaceutical industry is a typical R&D intensive industry with great prospects. The patented technology of pharmaceutical companies in various countries not only mirrors their respective areas of advantage and the intensity of industrial competition, but also determines the future landscape of competition in the industry. This essay, co-authored by Chen Xiangdong and Zhang Chen, presents us with an in-depth analysis of China’s distribution of the patent technology resources of foreign, particularly American, pharmaceutical companies, as well as the trend of development, on the basis of an analysis of the characteristics of technological innovation by the pharmaceutical industry. The characteristics and trends revealed in this study will no doubt have significant implications for the technological innovation strategies of Chinese pharmaceutical companies and the state industrial policy.
