Editoria Note:
It is generally accepted that the industrial economic efficiency in eastern China is higher
than that in the country’s central, west and northeast parts. However, this has begun to change, due in part to
recent upgrades and investments in the central and western regions as well as acceleration of the industrialization
and urbanization process. This analysis, looking at detailed data from China’s 10th Five-year Plan (2001-2005),
conducts a systematic comparison of the industrial development efficiency in eastern and western regions in China
from economic, social and ecological efficiency perspectives.
