Editorial note:
The emergence of rural migrants marks a further step in the liberation of Chinese farmers since the adoption of the rural household contract responsibility system in the 1980s. Encouraging farmers to find jobs in cities is the most effective means of promoting rural development, in a way to get industries to support agriculture, cities to support countryside, and developed regions to support underdeveloped regions. To solve the problems faced by rural migrants, the government needs to offer guidance and assistance in expanding employment in cities and ensure the protection of rural migrant workers’ rights and interests, as well as the provision of public services, good employment conditions and working environment. This article provides an in-depth analysis of rural migrant workers and puts forward a basic outline and prediction of their pattern of migration.
