Editorial note:

International experiences show that most industrialized nations have experienced a contradictory stage of fast per capita energy consumption growth versus rapid energy structural change in the process of industrialization. Given China’s unique situation, however, China faces a more complicated landscape under the international backdrop of rising economic globalisation and environmental protection. China must reassess its energy production and consumption policies and formulate a more comprehensive and systematic long-term energy strategy to protect national energy security and meet the needs of building a conservation-oriented society. This issue is explored in the Focus column of this edition to help readers gain a deeper understanding of China’s energy problems with respect to their origination, evolution and future trends.
