Editorial note:

Farmers are at the heart of China’s “three agricultural issues” (agriculture, rural areas and farmers). Characterized by inequality and vulnerability, classification as a “farmer” or “peasant” in China means more obligations than privileges. To overcome this problem, China must realize the professionalization of farmers and remove the barriers associated with the “peasant status”. This article gives an overall review and outlook concerning this transformation.
